"Abortion clinics are killing our children!"

You hear your mother say. It’s 2018, and here she is screaming after a lengthy debate you two had after church. You sit down at your desk and you start contemplating your life. No one knows of the abortion you had last summer when that guy you met at a party was a little too handsy even after you consistently said no. Were you wrong to get an abortion? Did you kill your baby selfishly?

Is abortion a dirty word?
Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. In 1973, a Supreme Court ruling, and a landmark for others titled “Roe VS Wade” set the table for many. This legal case was based around an unmarried, pregnant woman, Roe, a resident of Texas who brought a class action suit challenging the constitutionality of the Texas abortion laws. When the case ended, the Supreme Court declared individual state bans on abortion during the first trimester as unconstitutional. Roe VS Wade allowed states to regulate, but not to ban, abortion during the second trimester. It allowed states to ban abortion in all trimesters unless the abortion was in the best interest of the woman’s physical or mental health.

So is abortion legal or nah?
Well, honestly, that’s a more complicated question than you’d think. Abortion laws(click for the specifics) vary from state to state. Most states make abortion illegal after 20 weeks except in cases of life or health endangerment. Within the 20-week limit, many states also require an additional physician present.

So uhm.. ’pro-life’ and ’pro-choice’?
Pro-lifers are people who feel like abortions should not be legal at all. They believe that abortion is the murder of children. If you do not want the child, pro-lifers expect you to place the child up for adoption. Many pro-lifers do not believe in contraceptives. Pro-choicers are people who feel like abortion is the choice of the pregnant person. These people you catch wearing vagina hats or run places like ’MemphisCHOICES.’ So maybe you’re asking yourself which side should you be on? And with that, I’ll provide you these facts, and you can make your own decisions.

Make your choice
On average 428,000 children are in foster care in the United States. Of those 428,000 children, about 135,000 children on average are adopted in the United States each year. Among these children, males outnumber females, and African American children are disproportionately represented. Over half of these children are 6 years or older. Foster care isn’t so bad, right? Children in foster care experience threats to their health and safety. This study includes sexual abuse, physical abuse, medical neglect, and neglect. So wait, you’re telling me that children are not being adopted AND they’re being abused? Okay so maybe adoption isn’t your best option. But isn’t contraceptives still an option?

Birth control, IUDs, and ’the pill’ are words that seem sticky, nasty, and gross. ’Thots’, ’hoes’, and ’loose’ people use birth control. Birth control is how you prevent unwanted pregnancies before they begin. It has consistently received bad reviews from religious groups. Still not convinced? Birth control not only helps you decide when YOU want to get pregnant, but it reduces the need for an abortion. MONEY! Thanks to it stopping unplanned pregnancies it leaves you with MONEY. Birth control literally saves you money. With all this greatness of birth control, why is birth control still inaccessible, expensive, and can be excluded in religious health plans? Great question. My best recommendation is to speak to your local state legislators to work towards the greater good.
